Dog Walk Benefit

March 3, 2010

Spring is on its way and with it will bring our second anniversary here at A Barker's Dozen.  Amazing how time flies, in the short time we have been open we have had the pleasure of making many new friends.  One group we have grown particularly fond of are the people of The Foster Dog Chronicles.  Patrick and Alyson who run the rescue take dogs from situations where they are at risk of being put down, bring them into their rescue (their home) and train them to live like happy and well behaved members of the family and then find them appropriate homes.  This year in conjunction with our anniversary party I am planning a dog walk to benefit The Foster Dog Chronicles.  There will be great prizes for those who raise the most money for this wonderful charity including gift baskets, and gift cards for the shop.  Every walker raising $20 or more will recieve a great goodie bag!  If you know of any one who would like to help sponsor this event and make it a great success please let us know!

Mental enrichment in canines

February 3, 2010

Many pet owners reallize the need for physical enrichment for the pets, walking the dog, taking them to the lake or the dog park, these are all very normal things when it comes to owning a dog.  One thing many pet owners don't think of is the need for metnal stimulation and enrichment to make their pet balanced.  Many activities that dogs participate in become routine, and especially this time of year it is very easy for our canine companions to get bored and in turn, get into trouble.  There are many toys that can help mentally stimulate our pets, kongs are very good for this, along with the canine genius toys that can have treats or kibble in them and the dog then needs to figure out how to get to it.  There are many things around the house that can help you play problem solving games with your pet and mentally stimulate them.  We are looking at a line of toys from Nina Ottoson that are made for just that.  The toys come in plastic and wood (the more expensive of the two) and are rated on levels of difficulty. I myself am very excited to get these... [More]

New 2010 products

January 26, 2010

So for 2010 I have been trying to bring in new and helpful products for making life with our pets easier and more fun.  One of my favorite products is the porta-poo that goes on your leash and carries the dog poo bags while you are walking so you don't have it in your hand.  Tag silencer is a little neoprene pouch that holds all the tags on the collar and keeps them from jingling around, it also helps keep them in good shape.  Nuhemp along with their great treats came out with a paw balm that comes in a deodorant type container, this is great for cracking or chappped paw pads.   For Valentines' Day of course we have brought in some fun new toys to remind our pets how much we love them, not to mention delicious goodies filling the case for fido.  If you know of a great product that you would like brought in let us know and we'd be happy to look into it.

January 11, 2010

Amazingly 2010 is here and we at A Barker's Dozen are trying to find new ways to move forward in the pet world, offering the best in pet health and nutrition and great new supplies at the best price!  We are working with a new bakery to bring in some new bakery treats with great human grade ingredients.  We are talking to many companies about bringing in raw pet food diets and trying to bring the best of the best to our furry members of the community.  If you haven't been in A Barker's Dozen lately stop in and see what's new!

Tis the season!

November 5, 2009

I am sure like many of you I have started my holiday shopping early this year.  Hoping to avoid some of the normal holiday stress I thought it best to start early and try to get it all done before December so I can enjoy the season for what it is.

Since it is November I have decided to be more thankful for what I have and try to do more for others that may not have so much.  One project we are hoping to see through sooner than later is working with Meals on Wheels to provide pet food to those who are homebound and can't get out to get their pets proper food.

If you know of any local worthy animal charities that could use our help, let me know!

Fall is coming

September 9, 2009

Summer flew by so fast as usual and school has started once again.   My little helper at the shop, my daughter went into first grade yesterday and came out minus a tooth.  We are making space in the store for our halloween items, new costumes and halloween themed toys will be here by next week.  We are thinking of adding raw food to our list of of available items in store and for delivery, just have to find room for a freezer : )  Michaela and I put the fall and winter apparell out earlier in the week, even though its still nice out, we all know how the cold comes so quickly here and a nice sweater or jacket will help our pets acclimate better to the chill.  There are some really cute hoodies and coats that came out this year!  Feel free to order online or over the phone to have items shipped directly to your door!  We have also started making custom gift baskets.  Many people order these based on a theme, or the pet's lifestyle for birthdays or just any day you want to make a furry friend feel special.  We have a range of possibilities depending on... So much happening!

May 8, 2009

I've been a bad blogger, I havent' been on here in a couple weeks because there is sooo much going on.  Last Saturday we celebrated our one year anniversary.  Thank you so much for all the support you guys have given me for the past year and for every body that stopped out on the second to celebrate with us!  On the 30th of April my little French Bulldog, Trixie had two puppies, one pied boy and one brindle girl.  Trix decided she wouldn't nurse the pups unless I sit right by her, needless to say I've had a lot of sleepless nights lately.  This weekend we are heading up to Canada to show Kiah and Titan so hopefully the weather is nice so they don't get muddy again before the shows!  On June 13th The Kritter Kronickles and A Barker's Dozen are sponsoring an event at the Clayton arena, to benefit local animal charities (including The Foster Dog Chronicles), there will be all kinds of activities for pets and kids so keep an eye out for more details!  I hope you all have a lovely Mothers' Day!

I promise I will try to be a better blogger from now on...

Help support a local shelter!

April 9, 2009

Starting April 13th visit the animal rescue site (www.animalrescuesite.com) and vote for The Foster Dog Chronicles.  You can vote each day and the shelters with the most votes get money awarded to them to put toward their shelter.  Once on the site you have to go to the left side and click on the tab that says Shelter Challenge.  The Foster Dog Chronicles are a some really great people who take dogs with behavioral problems or just having a hard time getting adopted from the pound and brings them to their home, trains them, rehabilitates them and finds them an awesome forever home.
